Kubernetes

Erik Reinert is a Senior Software Engineer with over a decade of experience in several fields of software development. Starting in frontend before backend and fullstack then moving focus to organizational problem solving in DevOps & Infrastructure. With the passion of finding the best solution for any problem through collaboration and documentation.

Kubernetes

In this hands-on two-day workshop, you’ll deploy a single small application — a Node/TypeScript API backed by Postgres — and mature it through three stages of Kubernetes posture, all built live. You’ll start with imperative kubectl commands on a local kind cluster, move to declarative manifests with health probes, durable storage, and Ingress, and finish with autoscaling, GitOps via Argo CD, and a migration to Amazon EKS. Along the way, you’ll learn how to name what’s wrong with each stage before you fix it. By the end, you’ll have the confidence to take a containerized app to production on Kubernetes and reason about which posture is right for which moment.

What You Will Master

The Senior Engineer Toolkit
  • Build a working mental model of Kubernetes — desired state, reconciliation, and the core primitives (Pods, Deployments, Services, Ingress) — so you can read and write any manifest with confidence
  • Mature an application from imperative experiments to declarative, durable, observable infrastructure with health probes, ConfigMaps, Secrets, durable Postgres via the CloudNativePG operator, and Kustomize
  • Operate production-shaped Kubernetes with autoscaling, safe rollouts, PodDisruptionBudgets, RBAC least-privilege, git-safe secrets with Sealed Secrets, and GitOps with Argo CD — then migrate the same app onto a real cloud cluster on Amazon EKS

Prerequisites

  • Fundamental knowledge of Docker and containers
  • Comfort with Git and the command line
  • Basic familiarity with AWS (an account with admin access is required for the Day 2 cloud capstone)

Who is this for?

This workshop is for software developers and DevOps engineers who want to deploy and operate containerized applications on Kubernetes. It starts from the fundamentals and builds to production-shaped patterns, so no prior Kubernetes experience is required — just basic familiarity with Docker, Git, the command line, and AWS.

The Blueprint

Kubernetes

Spend two full days learning to automate the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. Take a single app from one bare Pod to an autoscaled, GitOps-managed deployment running on Amazon EKS — building everything live, and naming what's wrong at each step before you fix it.

Warning: High intensity learning environment.
