Vets Who Code

Jerome Hardaway is an Air Force veteran and Google Developer Expert who works both sides of the hiring table. In industry, he is an engineering manager whose career spans big tech, ed tech, private equity tech, and the public sector โ€” Microsoft, McGraw Hill, Vista Equity Partners, and Accenture Federal Services, supporting USPS and the U.S. Department of Education. In the community, he is the Geek At Arms (Executive Director & Founder) of Vets Who Code, a veteran-led 501(c)(3) that since 2014 has trained 300+ veterans and military spouses into software engineers, with $20M+ in collective alumni earnings, 100% remote and free to the troops. A GitHub Star alum and LinkedIn Learning instructor, his work has earned White House workforce development recognition and been featured in Wired, Business Insider, and the Stack Overflow Blog. He builds teams by day and builds engineers for them by night, so he teaches the job search the way hiring managers actually read it โ€” as an engineering problem. Gather the data, build the artifacts, ship, and measure, using AI to sharpen what you already have, never to invent what you don’t.

Are you familiar with the Master.dev platform? It's a platform I absolutely love โค๏ธ . Today, I'd like to talk about an interesting course I recently completed, titled "Getting a Front-End Developer Job" by Jerome Hardaway, who's also known by "Captain America." Cool name, right? ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Throughout this course, I gained valuable insights into enhancing both of my resume and portfolio, to make them more appealing and professional. Moreover, I discovered the range of tools that will give me a competitive edge, and most notably, I learned about the HR users and how to catch their eyes ๐Ÿ‘€.

There is a saying in tech says: "getting a job is a job itself" ๐Ÿง . So let me share with you guys the bunch of the things that I've learned and which i believe will help to get a job:

Understanding HR Users:
- BOTS: These automated systems scan resumes based on skills.
- HR Recruiters: They're influenced by the resume/portfolio design and fast loading.
- Tech Community: The more you're known in the tech world (via LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.), the more appealing you become.

Essential TECH Tools:
- Basic Skills: HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
- Advanced Skills: Web Accessibility, API usage, Design Systems, SEO, and understanding Serverless tech.

Writing the Right Resume:
- Introduction: Showcase who you are with diligence rather than just passion. Mention ongoing projects and use relevant tech terminology.
- Education: Highlight relevant experiences first, including university, bootcamp, and certifications, lead with projects. Mention courses if you've completed a full path.
- Experience: Emphasize relevant roles with job descriptions, tools used, and impact. Include internships, volunteer work, freelance projects, and even non-tech jobs with a focus on soft skills.

Building an Impressive Portfolio:
- Optimize your GitHub account with a polished profile, pinned projects, the usage of plugings and repo activities.
- Keep your portfolio user-friendly, infused with your personality. Feature your top three projects and include a contact form. Minimize the use of CSS libraries.
- Utilize platforms like CodePen to capture HR attention.

Creating Engaging Content:
- Share content consistently on networks like LinkedIn, Dev.to, Twitter, and Twitch.
- Continuously work on new projects and share them with the world.
- Expand your professional network by connecting with others.

Jerome Hardaway Thank you for this amazing course, i really enjoyed ๐Ÿงก
