Personally, I wouldn’t blame you if you were asked what CSS needs these days and you were like uhm, I think it’s good, actually. These days CSS probably has more in it than you even know about or have tried, making it feel not particularly lacking. But if you really dig into the specifics, you’ll find plenty. I enjoyed Patrick Brosset’s dive into CSS layout specifically, listing a solid dozen, as well as general concerns about difficulty.

i also analyzed the results of the 2025 State of CSS survey. my CSS layout DSL “gridpack” tries to tackle some of the problems that people feel, especially verbosity. the grid/flex overlap reflects in a shared mental model in my DSL while CSS syntax differs largely for both. i still have a bunch of ideas here, e.g. about nested layouts. check it out. tell me your opinion. find me on reddit.
